Patriot Aviation private jet available as an empty leg
Why it costs less

The aircraft is already flying.
With or without passengers.

Every time we drop passengers at a destination, the aircraft has to return to its base or continue on to pick up the next client. That leg is flown either way, empty, and its cost is already committed. Opening it to the public lets us recover part of that expense and lets you fly private for a fraction of the usual price.

The trade-off is flexibility: the route and schedule are set by the movement of the fleet, not by your calendar. If you can adjust your dates, it’s the most affordable way to fly by private jet. If you need full control of the itinerary, a custom-quoted flight is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about empty legs

It’s a leg the aircraft has to fly without passengers: the return to its base after dropping off a client, or the repositioning flight to go pick up the next one. Since that flight will happen anyway, it’s offered at a preferential rate. We explain it in depth further down this page.

The savings are significant because the cost of the leg is already committed, but they vary with the route, the aircraft and how close the date is. Each leg is priced individually; when we alert you to an available one, you’ll see the exact rate before committing.

Not far, and that’s their nature: an empty leg exists because someone just booked a flight. They’re typically known days in advance, sometimes hours. That’s why it’s best to join the alert list rather than checking manually.

No. The origin, destination and departure window are set by the movement of the aircraft. There’s little room to adjust, and in some cases none. If you need full control of the itinerary, a custom-quoted flight is what you want, not an empty leg.

Yes. It’s the same aircraft from our fleet, the same crew and the same private-terminal access. The only thing that changes is how the flight originated and, as a result, what it costs.

Yes. Legs are assigned in order, and members get the alert first, along with other conditions on the fleet. You can see how it works in memberships.

Quick guide

Empty legs in Mexico: how to take advantage of them without surprises

The empty leg is the most accessible gateway into private aviation, but it plays by different rules than a custom-quoted flight. Understanding them is the difference between landing an exceptional rate and getting frustrated waiting for a route that never appears.

Why do empty flights exist?

A private jet doesn’t live at the airport you’re flying to. It has a base, and a schedule that moves it between clients. Every time it drops passengers at a destination, one of two things happens: it returns empty to its base, or it repositions empty toward wherever its next flight is waiting. That passenger-free leg is called an empty leg, a ferry flight or a repositioning leg — the same concept under different names — and its operating cost is already committed no matter what.

Who benefits most from an empty leg

  • Travelers with flexible dates, who can move their plans by a day or two.
  • Frequent fleet routes, where legs recur regularly.
  • Small groups already ready to go, without many calendars to coordinate.
  • Anyone wanting to try the experience of flying private before booking full flights.
  • Return trips, when the outbound was made by other means and you only need to get back.

What you accept in exchange for the price

It’s worth saying plainly, because it’s the number-one source of misplaced expectations:

  • You don’t choose the route. The origin and destination are set by the movement of the aircraft.
  • The schedule is narrow. There’s some room, but it’s tight.
  • Notice is last-minute. Days, sometimes hours.
  • It can be canceled. If the original flight that generated the leg changes, the empty leg disappears.
  • The aircraft is set by the operation, not by your preferred model.

If any of those points doesn’t work for you, a custom-quoted flight is the better option; you can request a tailored estimate on our quote your flight page.

Routes where they tend to appear most often

Based in Toluca, the most common empty legs connect central Mexico with the destinations of highest executive and leisure demand: Monterrey, Guadalajara, Cancún, Los Cabos, Querétaro, Puerto Vallarta, Tijuana, Mérida and Acapulco, plus routes toward the southern United States. Availability changes every week depending on the flights that have been booked.

Empty leg, charter and private flight: they’re not the same

The custom-quoted private flight is designed by you: route, schedule and aircraft tailored to your needs. A charter is booking a complete aircraft for a specific itinerary. An empty leg means taking advantage of a leg that was already going to fly: same service, much lower price, but no control over the itinerary. All three use the same fleet and the same certified operation.

How to improve your chances

Register with a clear route and the widest range of dates you can offer; be realistic about the number of passengers and luggage, since they determine which aircraft apply; and respond quickly when we alert you, because legs are assigned in order of confirmation. If you fly with some regularity, our memberships program gives you priority on that alert.

Leave us your route and your date flexibility. It costs nothing to be on the list, and the day a compatible leg appears you’ll be among the first to know.
